The written exam is held twice a year. The date is set by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Greece. The exam takes place at special examination centers simultaneously across the country.

Those wishing to take the exam submit applications online and pay a fee of 150 euros (https://exetaseis-ithageneia.ypes.gr/aitiseis/#login/ ). The fee is waived for those whose application for Greek citizenship was submitted before 31/03/2021 and is under review by the Citizenship Department, provided that the applicant is taking the exam for the first time.

The written exam consists of 20 questions divided into thematic blocks: 4 questions on geography, 4 questions on culture, 6 questions on history, and 6 questions on the political system. Knowledge of the Greek language is also tested in the exam. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency in both written and spoken Greek at the B1 level. The written part consists of 20 questions and an essay. During the oral part, the candidate will be asked to answer 10 questions and discuss three different topics.

All the topics and questions are publicly available on the website of the General Secretariat for Citizenship of Greece (https://exetaseis-ithageneia.ypes.gr/#topics/general ).

A candidate successfully passes the exam if they score 70% of the maximum score for both parts of the exam. The passing percentage for the thematic blocks is 50%, and for the language section, it is 66%.

The answers are checked by two examiners independently of each other. The final grade is the average of the scores given by both examiners.

The completion of the exam is confirmed with a certificate.
